Anna Avladimirovna Yurkevich is the director of School No. 4 in government-controlled Krasnohorivka, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. Her school is 5 km from the frontline “Line of Contact” in the war between Ukraine and the separatist Donetsk People’s Republic.
In an interview with international OSCE monitors, she said: “We have 56 students registered. Before, 100-110 children attended grades 1 through 9. The number of students is low as many families have not yet returned to the area. However, for people with limited financial resources, leaving town was not an option, as money was necessary to find accommodation in another location. Many homes, including my own house, have been damaged as a result of shelling.

Two classrooms were damaged by shrapnel, and have not been repaired. The school is in need of many repairs. However there are no funds available. Military personnel occupied our school building from September 2014 to October 2015. It took considerable time to repair the damage to the school as all windows were broken, the building was extremely dirty and computers, musical instruments, gym equipment and teaching equipment had disappeared.

The heating system was destroyed as result of the occupation — specifically, the radiators and pipes froze during winter. As a result, our school is only open during warm weather. From November to April we relocate to School No. 5, which is the only school in town with a working heating system.”
The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission has over 700 unarmed civilian monitors from 45 countries posted in Ukraine, observing and reporting on security and humanitarian issues stemming from the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine.
