On the coast of Fukushima Prefecture, a line of crumpled mountains rises up suddenly from the coastal plain. Here in Soma, the tsunami waves were more than 30 feet high and flooded 2½ miles inland. The worst radiation fell west of here, two days later, as radioactive particles rained down in the damp mountain air.
