In a conversation with international OSCE monitors, she said: “Before the war I lived in Avdiivka and worked in Donetsk. It was just a short trip from here to there. In 2014 I had just finished decorating my new apartment. I lived in a tall apartment building at the edge of town. On Vorobiova Street. Then the war started and our building was destroyed. Really terrible, they were shelling it every day. Almost nobody can live there anymore. I couldn’t go to Donetsk anymore. I got a job at this restaurant and I rented a new apartment just a block from here.
I support the [Ukrainian] army because when the DPR forces came they took everything — such as cars — and it became a ghost town, but now Ukrainian forces keep us safe. If the army was not here, Avdiivka would not be here. I met these Ukrainian soldiers who come here to eat, and one of them was very wonderful. Mikhail, he just became my husband today.”
The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission has over 700 unarmed civilian monitors from 45 countries posted in Ukraine, observing and reporting on security and humanitarian issues stemming from the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine.
