“The Bible gives us fortitude.” — Eduard Evteev, manager at the Chernobyl Training Center

Morning rush in the Evteevs’ kitchen: Tanya checks her work schedule while her family finishes breakfast. Her husband, Eduard, was diagnosed with a kidney tumor but recovered after surgery. He is a man of faith. “My belief was a support,” he says. “God gives us life and has the right to take it away.” Now Tanya is a janitor at the plant, working three or four 12-hour shifts a week.
