Shevchenko, retired from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, has spent most of her life here. “After the explosion, we left for Donbass,” she recalls. “There was lots of chemical factories, chemical emissions in the air! And we decided that our native radiation is better. We came back to live and work here.” When her family left, Shevchenko again chose to stay.
